Purpose - Kaupapa
We are a team of people dedicated to getting rid of all pokie machines from Aotearoa New Zealand.
We have been working at a local level in Auckland, Tokoroa, Gisborne and Christchurch, but it has been an uphill battle, because of the way New Zealand's gambling law is written and administered. Now we are setting out to change the law: to make pokies (or "Electronic Gaming Machines") illegal in this country.
Pokie gambling in pubs and clubs causes more gambling harm than all other types of gambling combined: more than Lotto, TAB and sports betting, card games, housie and online gambling combined.
The Gambling Act was supposed to allow pokie gambling, while preventing and minimising gambling harm. But it has failed to do that. We can see the harm pokie gambling does to our families and communities, every day.
It is our mission to make pokie machines illegal: to permanently remove the worst cause of gambling harm in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Strategy - Rautaki
We have created this incorporated society: Feed Families Not Pokies Aotearoa to educate communities, inform politicians, and agitate for change.
Our strategy is simple: to expose the corrupting influence the pokie industry has on New Zealand's public service and political system; by telling the truth, by informing and educating people about how the system has failed. By proving those facts in court. And ultimately, to persuade the government to ban pokies.
The pokie industry makes hundreds of millions of dollars a year, much of it extracted from New Zealand's poorest communities. They are also ruthless. They know how much harm their pokies do, but they don't care.
But we believe we can take them on and defeat them.
With your help, we will.

Our main expense will be to take High Court actions (Declaratory Judgement or Judicial Review) against the Department of Internal Affairs and the Gambling Commission, for administrative and judicial decisions we understand to be illegal.
We need funds to cover court costs, which can be thousands of dollars.
